Our Story
Mahi was inspired by her friend who had been learning to crochet so during her 12th birthday, she received a few beginner crocheting books and some hooks. She quickly began watching YouTube videos and learned how to crochet. She began with just a chain of stitches and advanced to making coasters and hats for her family members. Eagerly wanting to make toys like her and her friend had always wanted, she expressed her desires to Emily. That night, Emily walked her through making her very first crocheted whale. Mahi was ecstatic and continued to make more animals. With time, her skills improved and she decided that she wanted to give back to her community. Mahi started creating toys and donating to an organization based in New Jersey, posting her creations on an Instagram account with just above 20 followers. Although Mahi was proud of her accomplishments, she wanted to be able to help more people but did not know how to do so.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Emily was very bored and often explored hobbies to pursue. While hiking in upstate New York, she decided that her next endeavor would be crocheting. She ordered her first crochet kit in August of 2021. In the years following, she used YouTube tutorials to learn how to create various different kinds of items. She even crocheted a house based on a historical monument for a school project. She often gave stuffed animals to her family, friends, and even teachers. In 2022, her eighth grade science teacher suggested using her talents for the good of the community, and this appealed to Emily. Along with a friend, she created a small organization called Caring Creatures, where they crocheted and sold stuffed animals. She also connected with authors and crocheted their book characters. Emily had started making an impact, but she really wanted to expand her mission further to bring more kindness to her community.
Fast-forward to one Driver’s Ed class, a nonprofit, run by high school students, came to present about organ donation, touching the hearts of so many students, including ours. After class, Mahi began expressing her thoughts to Emily about crocheting and how she wanted to make it something more than it was. With the same passion that Mahi had, Emily completely agreed that their goal was to help those who were in an unfortunate situation. From that point forward, they began collaborating, figuring out what exactly they wanted to make their mission about. They began understanding each other’s goals and drives, working with one another to expand the organization as much as possible.
